Daddy passed away on August 18, 2008 at 1:10 pm. It is too soon for me to blog about the details but I wanted to add the video that we played during his funeral. Daddy would have liked it.

My brother and I had asked Daddy back in March if we could play Never Been To Spain at his funeral because it was the only song we had ever heard him sing. He agreed, laughed and then started singing it. We had several people tell us that they had heard him sing that song over the years. We chose the Sanford and Son theme because Daddy owned a shop and salvage and my brother worked with him. Daddy had that as his ringtone for awhile. Daddy’s Hands was chosen by Mimi, my step-mom and I couldn’t have agreed more. There was always something about my Daddy’s hands. I remember the first time I heard it I could picture his hands and relate to the song. I noticed before I had to leave town that my brother has the same hands.

Daddy is the inspiration for this site and you can read more about him here.

Be sure to have your sound on.

Michelle,
Your dad was a wonderful friend to my family. He could always make us laugh. My brother (Bob Gibson) thought a lot of Sam also. Michelle, you are right about Sammy’s hands. They do look like your dad’s. Your dad made several visits to the lake when Eddie and I had our trailer. He loved the lake and everything about it. He used to come by after he had been to the farm to check everything out. Always loved a good steak. He once said that Eddie cooked the best steak but, I know that Sammy has now taken over that as his are much better as Sam was sure to let me know.

I never did get to be around your daddy. I really don’t ever remember meeting him, although I’m sure I did at some point in time. Mom said he was SO funny and really a good person.

I loved your daddy!! He never turned his back on me after the divorce…thankfully Sammy and I are in a place where we’re better friends than we’ve ever been, and I will always be part Slavens. I love you and Sammy and Brandon, and I always will. PAPA was Brittany’s hero, and I feel so blessed that she had Sam for a PAPA.
